General Info

Okane San Francisco brings a polished yet approachable take on Japanese comfort food to 669 Townsend St in San Francisco. Located in the city’s lively SoMa neighborhood, this izakaya-style restaurant is a convenient choice for a casual lunch, an easy dinner, or a relaxed meal with friends. The setting feels modern and comfortable, while the menu offers plenty of familiar Japanese flavors with a refined touch.

Sharing is a big part of the experience at Okane San Francisco. Instead of ordering one large entrée, diners can choose several small plates and enjoy a little bit of everything. This style makes the restaurant especially appealing for groups, date nights, and anyone who likes exploring different textures and flavors during one meal.

Handmade sushi rolls are among the main attractions. The rolls are carefully prepared, neatly presented, and designed to balance fresh ingredients with flavorful sauces and complementary toppings. Guests can mix a few creative rolls with more traditional selections, making it easy to build a meal that suits both adventurous diners and sushi fans who prefer familiar combinations.

Beyond sushi, Okane San Francisco serves Japanese comfort dishes and Asian-inspired staples that add warmth and variety to the table. Savory small plates, satisfying rice-based options, seafood preparations, and shareable appetizers provide plenty of ways to round out an order. Because the menu is built around variety, diners can keep things light or create a more filling spread.

The izakaya atmosphere also encourages guests to slow down. Plates arrive ready to share, conversation flows naturally, and there is no need to rush through the experience. The dining room offers a cleaner and more refined mood than a traditional neighborhood pub, yet it still feels informal enough for an unplanned weekday meal.

Its Townsend Street location makes Okane a practical dining stop for people working or exploring nearby areas of San Francisco. It works well for colleagues looking for Japanese food after work, couples planning a low-key evening, or friends who want sushi without choosing an overly formal restaurant.

Service and presentation help complete the experience. The dishes are arranged with care, but the restaurant does not feel stiff or overly ceremonial. Instead, Okane San Francisco focuses on well-made food, comfortable hospitality, and a menu that invites diners to try several items together.

For the best experience, start with a few small plates, add one or two handmade rolls, and include a warm comfort dish for the table. This approach captures what the restaurant does best: refined Japanese flavors, easy sharing, and an enjoyable izakaya meal in the heart of San Francisco.

What customers say?

“ Simple wonderful time and experience here. Simple but yet elegant decor for a small place, with music (background, can be loud sometimes). Parking is found by street parking, we parked couple blocks away, free of course. Friendly, attentive and cheerful service throughout our dinning. The foods are fresh and very delicious. We couldn't stop ordered from one to the next and many more. It was a delicious dinner with great service overall. ”

“ Good variety of selections. The sushi portions are not too big, and the prices are reasonable. I just wish the fish could be served slightly warmer - I understand it’s kept chilled for safety, but the strong contrast between the cool fish and warm rice slightly affects the overall enjoyment. Still, it was a good experience overall! ”

“ Had business dinner with my team here on a weeknight, and the restaurant was very accommodating g for a reservation of 10 people. The place was a bit small, but there was enough space to seat all 9 of us. We ordered a lot of items: Hamachi Crudo, Pork and Vegetable Gyoza, Soft Shelled Crab, Edamame, Salmon, Tuna, and Unagi rolls, the Caterpillar roll, and many others. All of them tasted above average, with no bad or bland dishes amongst all that were served. My personal favorite was the fried soft-shelled crab, which was surprisingly light, crispy, and had just the right amount of flavor. The food was overall excellent, though there was no true standout. Highly recommend especially as the prices were fair and not too expensive. 4.5 out of 5. ”
